One thing you can do is just build a small hut on your first night before starting something big like an underground home, but here is a way to start an underground home as soon as you start the game in the Xbox 360 version and survive.

Get 4 pieces of bark from the trees.WH.performance.mark('step1_rendered');

Open your crafting table and craft some wood planks, after that craft a crafting table.

Get the materials to build a pick axe and shovel, if you don't know what you need the crafting menu will show you.

Begin digging underground.

By now it should start getting dark, so begin digging forward away from your hole so the monsters won't see you from above ground.

Stay in you hole till day comes.

Wait a little after the sun comes out.

Continue building your underground home.
